RootsAction.org, with an email list of about 1.2 million people in the United States, is preparing to launch a public pressure campaign to block Joe Biden’s renomination in 2024. The effort is the latest sign of unrest among Democrats about Biden, whose job approval rating has dropped during a challenging midterm election year.

The group plans to spend six figures on a “#DontRunJoe” campaign, with digital ads starting in early nominating states on November 9, one day after the midterm elections. According to a New York Times/Siena poll, 64 percent of Democrats, and 94 percent of Democrats under the age of 30, prefer someone other than Biden to run in two years.

RootsAction called Biden a failed President who could not win a second term, and for the good of the Party, he should decline to seek re-election. The group cited the example of 1968, when the Democrat Party’s left-wing base united behind Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy in his Primary challenge to President Johnson, leading to Johnson’s decision not to seek re-election.

RootsAction’s statement is clear that its immediate goal within the Democratic Party is to “dump Biden” much as anti-Vietnam-War forces among Democrats set out to “dump Johnson” in 1967. This creates a self-fulfilling prophecy where Biden’s poll numbers can never recover due to the fact that he gets hit every day on the Left and the Right.
